This week, General Motors announced charitable investments in the communities surrounding its U.S. manufacturing facilities, providing grants to 157 nonprofit organizations totaling $3 million.
The grants were provided through GM’s Community Impact Grants program, which was created in 2010 to empower local GM leaders and employees to direct funding toward nonprofit organizations addressing local issues facing their communities.
“Across the U.S., in the communities where our people work and live, GM’s Corporate Giving and Manufacturing teams continue to make a great impact year after year,” said Gerald Johnson, GM executive vice president, Global Manufacturing and Sustainability. “Through the Community Impact Grants program, we are able to support our facilities and the organizations they believe in by utilizing our local relationships and the generosity of our workforce to strengthen our communities and build upon the incredible work these organizations do every day.”
Funding was provided to local nonprofits in cities including:
- Arlington, Texas: Six grants totaling $160,000, including $30,000 to a program that provides free skills training and employment services to veterans and their family members at the Community Learning Center.
- Toledo, Ohio: Seven grants totaling $100,000, one of which supports the Kitty Todd Nature Preserve, an organization that GM employees have volunteered with for 20 years.
- Flint, Michigan: $270,000 was dedicated to eight nonprofits, including a $20,000 grant to the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint to implement a hands-on, activity-based STEM curriculum in their afterschool and summer programming.
- Fairfax, Kansas: Seven nonprofits received grants totaling $125,000, including a $35,000 grant to the United Way of Greater Kansas City’s Family Empowerment Initiative, which will support at least 20 families through the eviction prevention program.
GM has provided more than $13 million through the Community Impact Grants program since 2019. These grants align with the company’s overarching philanthropic priorities focused on STEM education, vehicle and road safety, and community development, as well as targeted investments that enhance the quality of life in facility communities around the world.

Chevrolet’s all-electric Equinox EV is tailored to help customers make a seamless, confident and uncompromising transition to an EV. Equinox EV rounds out an electric Chevy portfolio that covers major segments, including full-size trucks, midsize SUVs and compact SUVs. The Equinox EV boasts an EPA-estimated range of 319 miles on FWD models.
“We are at a turning point where EVs will be the mainstream choice for the next generation of customers and Equinox EV will lead this charge for us,” said Mary Barra, Chair and CEO of General Motors. “With the flexibility of GM’s Ultium Platform, we are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every purpose.
Today, the Equinox EV has a starting MSRP of $43,295. The base Equinox EV LT with a starting MSRP of $34,995 will be available for ordering later in the year.

In addition to the Ultium-based propulsion technologies, key features include a large, 17.7-inch-diagonal infotainment screen, a strong suite of standard and available driver assistance technologies, and available Super Cruise hands-free driver assistance technology on compatible roads.

Expressive design
At a glance, the Equinox EV’s expressive design has an athletic, bold and commanding appearance that is instantly recognizable as a Chevy SUV. Two distinctive personalities — LT and RS — are offered in both FWD and AWD drive configurations.

A standard front-wheel-drive system with GM estimated 213 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque offers quick acceleration and a fun driving experience for everyday tasks, with a 288-horsepower and 333 lb-ft torque eAWD system available.
One-Pedal Driving is standard and allows the Equinox EV to accelerate and slow to a full stop, using only the accelerator. It’s paired with regenerative braking, which can convert the kinetic energy of the vehicle’s forward momentum into electricity that’s stored in the battery pack to maximize the driving range.
The Equinox EV also packs the latest in charging technology:
- Standard 11.5 kW Level 2 (AC) charging, which can add up to 34 miles of range per hour of charging, per GM estimates
- Standard DC fast-charging capability of up to 150 kW, which enables approximately 77 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes, per GM estimates
GM covers the Equinox EV’s battery with an 8-year/100,000-mile limited warranty, in addition to the vehicle’s standard bumper-to-bumper coverage for added peace of mind.
Available for fleet and retail customers
As with the new Blazer EV and Silverado EV, the Equinox EV also offers fleet customers the benefits of zero-emissions driving, zero gas stops and the opportunity for reduced maintenance.

Chevrolet has announced that production of the 2024 Silverado EV First Edition RST is now underway, offering increased driving range and payload capacity. The 2024 Silverado EV — the reimagining of the brand’s best-selling nameplate — is packed with the power and capability expected of Chevy Trucks, including:
- EPA-estimated 450-mile range on a full charge on 4WT
- GM-estimated 440-mile range on a full charge on RST
- Up to 754 horsepower with more than 785 lb-ft of torque in available max power Wide Open Watts Mode on First Edition RST, enabling a GM-estimated 0-60 mph time of less than 4.5 seconds
- Standard DC fast charging (up to 350kW) on WT and RST
- Up to 10.2kW of offboard power on WT and RST with optional equipment
- Up to 10,000 pounds of maximum trailering with up to 1,500 pounds of payload on RST
Developed from the ground up as a fully electric truck on GM’s advanced Ultium Platform, the Silverado EV offers a boundary-breaking combination of capability, performance and versatility, along with advanced technologies that can evolve the vehicle over time.

The Silverado EV is available in two configurations, a First Edition RST and a fleet-oriented WT model. Each offers a comprehensive suite of standard and available safety technologies.
The fully loaded First Edition RST includes:
- Four-Wheel Steer
- Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension
- Multi-Flex Midgate that expands the truck’s cargo capability while maintaining seating for rear-row passengers
- Available Multi-Flex Tailgate with power release
- Large, 17-inch-diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen paired with a neighboring 11-inch-diagonal reconfigurable driver instrument display and a multi-color driver head-up display with a field of view of over 14 inches
- Trailering-capable Super Cruise, the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology, allowing drivers to travel hands-free on more than 400,000 miles of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada
The WT launched last year for fleet customers and offers impressive capability to meet the needs of organizations with sustainable transportation goals, including 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. The 4WT will offer 10,000 pounds of towing and 1,500 pounds of payload.
“Our design and engineering teams started from the ground up to create a pickup with impressive performance and capability,” said Kathy Gillespie, Silverado EV chief engineer. “The Silverado EV RST is a long-range, fast charging electric truck that does all the ‘truck things’ customers want and more. It can tow, haul and carry passengers comfortably. With 754 horsepower, it also happens to be the most powerful Silverado we’ve ever built.”
A new body architecture, which efficiently leverages the available Ultium battery pack as a part of the fundamental structure, enables the vehicle’s impressive range. This structural design integrates the capability Silverado customers have come to expect from a full-size pickup in terms of strength, durability and performance, while also providing a more comfortable, confident ride both on- and off-road.
Additionally, the chassis is designed with independent front and rear suspensions, with power transferred to the available 24-inch wheels on RST via front- and rear-drive motors that compose the e4WD system. Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension enables the vehicle to be raised or lowered up to 2 inches (50 mm).
Four-Wheel Steer reduces the turning radius at lower speeds for greater maneuverability in parking lots, and enhances handling and stability at higher speeds, particularly when trailering.
The RST and WT models also come with Tow/Haul mode, trailer hitch provisions, and an integrated trailer brake controller and Hitch Guidance. The RST also includes Chevy’s Advanced Trailering System.
Phenomenal performance
The RST and WT feature public DC fast charging capabilities of up to 350kW enabling approximately 100 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes based on GM estimates.
When combined with the available accessory power bar, the Silverado EV’s PowerBase charging system offers up to 11 outlets, to provide a total of 10.2kW of all-electric power for countless worksite or recreational needs, including powering a home, with the required equipment.
The Silverado EV is also capable of charging another EV using the available accessory charge cord, sharing its power in times of need.
Access to fast, convenient charging is essential for lowering the barriers to broader EV adoption, and GM has long championed a collaborative approach. By continuing to work with others in the industry, GM is helping accelerate the installation of accessible public charging throughout North America.
Through the use of the MyChevrolet mobile vehicle app, RST owners have access to over 174,000 public chargers, and growing, throughout the U.S. and Canada.
WT customers can leverage GM Energy and GM Envolve’s solutions, including EV charging infrastructure planning, site operations, energy management and telematics, and other bundled services which help support commercial operations.
Designed for performance and functionality
Inside and out, the Silverado EV RST and WT are thoughtfully designed for functional flexibility.
“We had no constraints when it came to designing the Silverado EV with dramatic style and flexible utility because we didn’t need to work around a traditional propulsion system,” said Phil Zak, executive director of Chevrolet Design. “The Ultium Platform allowed us to redefine what it means to offer expansive new storage and utility possibilities.”
Exterior proportions and surfacing convey the truck’s capability and athletic performance. The front-end design has been sculpted to efficiently direct air down the body side, significantly reducing drag and turbulence. As a result, the Silverado EV WT is estimated to have one of the lowest drag coefficients of any available production full-size pickup truck, which helps enable the impressive range.
The Silverado EV will be offered exclusively in Crew Cab models, with a shorter front overhang that gives the truck a more aggressive stance, more spaciousness and enhances forward downvision. The second row is pushed rearward, meaning passengers over 6 feet tall will be comfortable no matter where they sit.
Customizable first row storage on both RST and WT models makes the most of the interior space and provides functional solutions for a variety of customer needs.
The eTrunk – a lockable, weatherproof compartment in the front of the vehicle – provides enough space to fit a large hardside suitcase and a multitude of accessory options for both fleet and retail customers to load gear based on the unique needs of the customer.
The RST’s modular console features a capacity of just over 7 gallons, meaning a lunch cooler can easily fit inside. The RST features a fixed-glass roof, which offers expansive visibility, increased headroom and an enhanced experience for both front and rear passengers.
On the RST, the storage capacity of the 5-foot-11-inch bed is maximized thanks to the innovative available Multi-Flex Midgate, which provides just over 9 feet of storage between the cab and the tailgate when the Midgate is open.
A 40/60 second-row seat offers four configurations that allow users to haul gear or equipment while still accommodating a passenger in the second row. With the addition of the available Multi-Flex Tailgate the Silverado EV RST enables up to 10 feet, 10 inches of load floor and storage capability. An available tonneau cover allows items such as lumber or a kayak to be loaded into a fully lockable, weatherproof storage compartment.
Technologies for today and tomorrow
The Silverado EV is packed with the latest technology, including an advanced software system that enables vehicle technologies to evolve over time.
As a driver approaches the RST with an enabled cell phone or key fob, a distinctive lighting animation greets them.
Upon entering the vehicle, a bold 3D animation appears on the RST’s large 17-inch- diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen, which is paired with a neighboring 11-inch-diagonal driver instrument display. Together with a driver head-up display with a field of view over 14 inches, a driver can’t ask for more information at their disposal. With new, hands-free start, the vehicle turns on automatically after the driver enters with an enabled device, leaving hands free to buckle up and get on the road.
Production and availability
The Silverado EV is assembled with domestically and globally-sourced parts at GM’s Factory ZERO Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center in Michigan — a facility repurposed and retooled with a $2.2-billion investment devoted to EV production.
The 2024 Silverado EV is available in multiple specs:
- 4WT with 450-mile range on a full charge
- 3WT with 393-mile range on a full charge
- RST First Edition with GM-estimated 440-mile range and MSRP of $94,500 + DFC
Soon, Chevrolet will roll out a suite of Silverado EV trims for retail customers, offered with a variety of range options and capabilities.
General Motors released its 2023 Sustainability Report today, showcasing the company’s commitment to building an equitable zero-emissions future and working toward its carbon-neutral goal. The report highlights GM’s initiatives to accelerate electric vehicle adoption, forge strategic partnerships to enhance supply chain sustainability, and support the development of a future-ready grid powered by renewable energy.
GM is striving to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in pursuit of a zero-emissions future. The report provides comprehensive insights into GM’s initiatives across key areas of focus, including environmental stewardship, innovation, social responsibility and governance.
“Sustainability is not just good policy. It’s good business — good for the company, for employees, and for recruiting and retaining the best people, people who will help us achieve our vision,” said GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. “We’ve made tremendous strides through our investments and innovations in electric and autonomous technology, and we’re going to expand our reach, especially with many important EV launches across a wide range of price points and segments this year.”
Key highlights from the new report include:
- Joining the ZEROgrid Initiative alongside other industry leaders and the Rocky Mountain Institute to drive progress toward a less carbon intensive, more reliable and affordable grid
- Planning to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) into future GM EVs, while also enabling access to more than 15,000 superchargers in 2024
- Expanding GM’s commitment to the First Movers Coalition to be inclusive of steel, aluminum, concrete and cement
- Providing $64 million in grants to nearly 400 U.S.-based nonprofits to help create inclusive solutions to social issues
“At GM, we are taking important steps toward supporting the transition to a more sustainable, zero-emissions future for everyone,” said Kristen Siemen, GM chief sustainability officer. “We continue to make progress integrating sustainability into our business from the initial design and selection of materials, through product development and manufacturing, to innovative solutions for end of life. While there’s more work to do, we are proud of our progress and are moving with purpose.”
This report has been prepared in reference to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2021 Standards and includes responses to the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB) framework.
