What are some of your family’s St. Patrick’s Day traditions?

We know we have a lot of adventurers in the Pacific Northwest, so we thought our readers would appreciate this article from The New Roads Magazine, Chevrolet’s online magazine. It discusses the how the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 is the perfect truck to get you to your adventures, especially if you’re a rock climber!

With help from the first-ever Silverado ZR2, coming in spring 2022, you can take your passion to new heights.

In the early 1990s, rock climbing was a fringe activity filled mostly with men, affectionately known as “dirtbags,” who spent months at a time sleeping under dank mossy boulders and living on ramen noodles and packets of ketchup. Fewer than 50 climbing gyms existed in the United States, and most of them were little more than janky plywood walls with river rocks bolted into them.

Today, the sport looks very different. More than 500 climbing gyms exist in cities across the United States, through which an estimated 10 million people each year are exposed to the physical challenge and joy of trying to scale vertical walls. Also, more than 50 percent of today’s sport-climbing participants are female. And thanks to the work of organizations such as Brown Girls Climb and Memphis Rox — a nonprofit climbing gym and community center in Tennessee that is open to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay — representation and participation rates among minority groups are also on the rise.

These welcome changes and increases in participation also bring the challenge of educating people on how best to take their passion for indoor climbing outside. Outdoors, you — and you alone — are responsible for your own safety, which means knowing how to use equipment properly, build anchors, safely navigate the edges of cliffs, and identify and climb around any loose blocks of rock so you don’t pull them off onto your partner. The climbing industry has created “Gym to Crag” initiatives that seek to educate people on how to climb outside safely and ethically, including leave-no-trace practices.

Along with the technical skills, you need to know where to go and how to get there. A lot of climbing areas are in the wilderness, which can mean taking unmarked, unpaved roads to trailheads marked by cairns and then hiking to the rock. Websites such as mountainproject.com offer crowd-sourced information about climbing destinations around the world.

Luckily, the first-ever Silverado ZR2, available in spring 2022, can help get you there — wherever “there” is. The ZR2 is the newest addition to the Silverado lineup, with scores of features to take on the rough terrain out there — whether you’re driving backwoods trails or crawling over boulders. That includes an off-road cut front bumper and large underbody aluminum skid plates to help you maneuver through rougher terrain, as well as Multimatic DSSV™ dampers that smooth out the ride — whether off-road or on pavement.

Go Bouldering

Bouldering outdoors is primarily about doing difficult movements on short rocks, between 10 and 20 feet high, and it’s the easiest way for anyone to experience what it’s like to climb outdoors. The only gear you need is your climbing shoes, a chalk bag, and a crash pad, which is a foam mat you can carry like a backpack on the approach, then lay flat beneath a boulder problem so you have a soft spot to land when you fall.

Spotting boulder climbers is different from belaying someone climbing with a rope. Hold your arms up as they climb, watching them closely; if they fall, try to “bump” them on their hips with the palms of your hands. You’re not trying to catch them, but merely soften their fall and guide them so they land on the crash pads. Similarly, learn how to fall: You don’t want to land on stiff legs; rather, try to tuck and crumple onto the crash pads. Placing crash pads over rocks and tree roots is a smart idea that will help you avoid a sprained ankle, the most common injury in bouldering.

Go bouldering at established areas, follow established trails, and feel free to ask the super-friendly climbers that you will invariably meet questions about where to go and what to try. Bouldering is a social, fun, and accessible way to learn climbing techniques and meet new friends.

Learn to Set Up Top Ropes

Top roping is the best way to gain confidence in your climbing technique. A top rope — which is a rope strung through an anchor at the top of the route — is a safe way to let you focus on practicing the moves, which will feel very different from what you may be used to in the gym. Generally, real rock can be sharp, painful, and slippery — sometimes all at once. It can also be harder to “read the rock” — to see handholds and footholds, and decipher the climbing sequence.

With just a handful of relatively inexpensive items of gear such as 20 feet of 1-inch tubular webbing, a cordelette, some slings, and a few locking carabiners, you can build a top-rope anchor almost anywhere, even as a beginner.

The best way to (literally) learn the ropes and understand how to construct safe anchors is to hire an AMGA-certified rock climbing instructor. Look for courses specifically designed to teach you how to establish top-rope anchors, and you’ll come away with a skill set that will let you feel confident in safely going outside to climb with your friends.

Chevrolet donates millions to charity that helps military families overcome financial hardships.

FIRST 2023 CORVETTE Z06 RAISES $3.6 MILLION FOR OPERATION HOMEFRONT

Operation Homefront will receive $3.6 million from today’s sale of the first retail 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 70th Anniversary Edition at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction. This is a record sale for a charity vehicle donated by a manufacturer at Barrett-Jackson, surpassing the previous record, held by the first retail 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, by $600,000.

The 2023 Corvette Z06, offering the highest horsepower naturally-aspirated V-8 to hit the market in any production car, was driven onto the block at the annual auction by retired Corvette Racing legend Oliver Gavin. Representatives from Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit focused on building strong, stable and secure military families, were at the auction to experience this exciting moment firsthand. 100 percent of the winning bid from Rick Hendrick, chairman and CEO of Hendrick Automotive Group and owner of 14-time NASCAR Cup Series champions Hendrick Motorsports, benefits Operation Homefront.

“We are deeply grateful to our friends at Chevrolet and Barrett-Jackson for choosing Operation Homefront as the beneficiary of this incredible auction,” said Brig. Gen. (ret.) John I. Pray Jr., president and CEO of Operation Homefront. “The proceeds from the sale of this sensational Corvette Z06 will go a long way to helping us help our military families overcome their financial hardships and have the opportunity to thrive in the communities – our communities – they’ve worked so hard to protect.”

Since 2017, Chevrolet has been a proud supporter of Operation Homefront. Chevrolet has provided seven Silverado full-size trucks to the organization’s headquarters and six regional offices, and donated funding for services. Today’s Barrett-Jackson auction significantly increases the funding support Chevrolet has been able to provide to Operation Homefront.

“It’s truly a privilege to support our military members and their families through Operation Homefront,” said Steve Hill, Chevrolet vice president. “Proceeds from the first retail 2023 Corvette Z06 will benefit many U.S. military families across the country who have done so much to serve our country.”

Reimagined title sequence of “The Sopranos” features Silverado EV in starring role

Actors Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Meadow Soprano) and Robert Iler (A.J. Soprano) with the Silverado EV on the set of the Chevrolet ”New Generation” commercial. Reservations for the Chevrolet Silverado EV are available now at Chevrolet.com.

The first-ever Chevy Silverado EV made its commercial debut during the big game in “New Generation,” a modernized version of the opening sequence from the classic show “The Sopranos.”

The HBO series, which aired from 1999 to 2007, has experienced a resurgence in popularity over the last two years, as original fans rediscover the hit series and a new generation of viewers dive into the drama. In the original title sequence, Tony Soprano drove a 1999 Chevy Suburban from Manhattan to New Jersey. Chevy updated the widely recognized opener with modern interpretations. Notably, these include Tony’s daughter, Meadow, driving the 2024 Silverado EV.

“This spot is about taking a nontraditional approach for a nontraditional electric truck,” said Steve Majoros, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “The Silverado EV redefines our best-selling nameplate, while the spot envisions what the next generation of ‘The Sopranos’ might look like today. The spot cements the Silverado EV’s position within American culture.”

“New Generation” features updated and optimistic interpretations from the original driving scene, including Jamie-Lynn Sigler who played Meadow with a lollipop instead of Tony smoking a cigar, a happy reunion between Meadow and Robert Iler who played her brother A.J., and Meadow using the Silverado EV’s Four-Wheel Steer technology, which helps make parking maneuvers much easier.https://www.youtube.com/embed/2bZYqFsU72Y

The spot was created by Chevy’s creative agency of record Commonwealth // McCann and features leading creatives from “The Sopranos”:

  • David Chase, show creator and director
  • Phil Abraham, director of photography for original title sequence
  • Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who portrayed Meadow Soprano (Tony Soprano’s daughter)

America’s Supercar is raising the stakes for military families

The first-ever retail production mid-engine Corvette Z06 will be a 70th Anniversary Edition. VIN 001 of this highly anticipated special edition Corvette Z06 will cross the auction block at Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022, with proceeds benefitting Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit focused on building strong, stable and secure military families who can thrive – not simply struggle to get by – in the communities they’ve worked hard to protect.

Since 2017, Chevrolet has been a proud supporter of Operation Homefront. Chevrolet has provided seven Silverado full-size trucks to the organization’s six regional offices and headquarters, and donated funding for services.

Legendary former Corvette Racing driver Oliver Gavin will drive the 2023 Corvette Z06 stand-in vehicle across the auction block for this special occasion.

Offering 400 miles of driving range, up to 10,000 pounds trailering capacity and loaded with high-tech innovations

2024 Silverado EV RST

Today, Chevrolet introduced the 2024 Silverado EV — the reimagining of the brand’s best-selling nameplate, packed with the power and capability expected of Chevy Trucks, offering:

  • Expected GM-estimated 400-mile range1 on a full charge offered on Work Truck (WT) and RST
  • Up to 664 horsepower with more than 780 lb-ft of torque in available max power Wide Open Watts Mode on RST, enabling a GM-estimated 0-60 mph time of less than 4.5 seconds2
  • Standard DC fast charging (up to 350kW)3 on WT and RST
  • Up to 10.2kW of offboard power on WT and RST with optional equipment
  • Up to 10,000 pounds of maximum trailering with up to 1,300 pounds of payload on RST4

Developed from the ground up as a fully-electric truck on GM’s advanced Ultium EV Platform, the Silverado EV offers a boundary-breaking combination of capability, performance and versatility, along with advanced technologies that can evolve the vehicle over time.

“Chevrolet has constantly revolutionized the Silverado franchise to make it the powerhouse it is today,” said Steve Hill, vice president of Chevrolet. “The Ultium Platform is a critical enabler of next-level pickup truck performance for both fleet and retail customers, whether they are currently driving a Silverado or are considering a pickup for the first time.”

At launch, the Silverado EV will be available in two configurations, an RST First Edition and a fleet-oriented WT model. Each will offer a comprehensive suite of standard and available safety technologies.

The flagship RST First Edition includes:

  • Four-wheel steering
  • Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension
  • Multi-Flex Midgate that expands the truck’s cargo capability while maintaining seating for a rear row passenger
  • Available Multi-Flex Tailgate with power release
  • Large, 17-inch-diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen paired with a neighboring 11-inch-diagonal reconfigurable driver instrument display and a multi-color driver head-up display with a field of view over 14 inches
  • Trailering-capable Super Cruise5, the industry’s first true hands-free driver-assistance technology, allowing drivers to travel hands-free on more than 200,000 miles of compatible roads across the U.S. and Canada

The WT will launch first for fleet customers and offer impressive capability to meet the needs of organizations with sustainable transportation goals, including 510 hp and 615 lb-ft of torque. The WT will offer 8,000 pounds of towing and 1,200 pounds of payload4. After initial launch, Chevrolet will introduce a fleet model with up to 20,000 pounds max trailering with the max tow package4.

“GM Fleet has long provided customers with great products and services, an exceptional customer experience and innovative solutions to meet their unique business needs,” said Ed Peper, vice president of GM Fleet. “We’re excited to launch the Silverado EV, providing customers with a true work-capable truck to help them begin the transition to an electric fleet and assist them in achieving their own sustainability goals.”

Ultium-powered propulsion
The Silverado EV harnesses the power of the Ultium Platform, which is the foundation of GM’s EV strategy and the driver of the company’s vision for a zero-emissions future.

“The Ultium Platform enabled our design and engineering teams to start from a clean slate and create a pickup with impressive performance and capability,” said Nichole Kraatz, Silverado EV chief engineer. “The result is a truly impressive testament to the creativity and innovation our teams can bring to market with speed and at scale.”

A new body architecture, which efficiently leverages the available 24-module Ultium battery pack as a part of the fundamental structure, enables the vehicle’s impressive range. This structural design integrates the capability Silverado customers have come to expect from a full-size pickup in terms of strength, durability and performance, while also providing a more comfortable, confident ride both on- and off-road.

Additionally, the chassis is designed with independent front and rear suspensions, with power transferred to the available 24-inch wheels on RST via front- and rear-drive motors that compose the e4WD system. Automatic Adaptive Air Suspension enables the vehicle to be raised or lowered up to 2 inches (50 mm).

Four-wheel steer capability reduces the turning radius at lower speeds for greater maneuverability in parking lots, and enhances handling and stability at higher speeds, particularly when trailering.

The RST and WT models also come with Tow/Haul mode, trailer hitch provisions, and an integrated trailer brake controller and Hitch Guidance. The RST also includes Chevy’s Advanced Trailering System.

Phenomenal performance
The RST and WT feature public DC fast charging capabilities of up to 350kW enabling approximately 100 miles of range to be added in 10 minutes based on GM estimates.

When combined with the available accessory power bar, the Silverado EV’s PowerBase charging system offers up to 10 outlets, to provide a total of 10.2kW of all-electric power for countless worksite or recreational needs, including powering your home, with the required equipment.

The Silverado EV is also capable of charging another EV using the available accessory charge cord, sharing its power in times of need.

With the growing North American network of chargers and the Energy Assist feature in the myChevrolet Mobile App, drivers can create energy-efficient route planning even while trailering.

RST owners also have access to Ultium Charge 360, GM’s holistic approach to EV charging, which is designed to simplify the overall charging experience, including access to more than 100,000 publicly available charging points in the U.S. and Canada.

WT customers have access to Ultium Charge 360 Fleet Service, which offers one of the industry’s most comprehensive charging solutions for businesses, whether drivers take their vehicles home or return to a central depot.

Designed for performance and functionality
Inside and out, the Silverado EV RST and WT are thoughtfully designed for functional flexibility.

“We had no constraints when it came to designing the Silverado EV with dramatic style and flexible utility because we didn’t need to work around a traditional propulsion system,” said Phil Zak, executive director of Chevrolet Design. “The Ultium Platform allowed us to redefine what it means to offer expansive new storage and utility possibilities.”

Exterior proportions and surfacing convey the truck’s capability and athletic performance. The front-end design has been sculpted to efficiently direct air down the body side, significantly reducing drag and turbulence. As a result, the Silverado EV WT is estimated to have one of the lowest drag coefficients of any available production full-size pickup truck, which helps enable the impressive range.

The Silverado EV will be offered exclusively in Crew Cab models, with a shorter front overhang that gives the truck a more aggressive stance, more spaciousness and enhances forward downvision. The second row is pushed rearward, meaning passengers over 6 feet tall will be comfortable no matter where they sit.

Customizable first row storage on both RST and WT models makes the most of the interior space and provides functional solutions for a variety of customer needs.

The eTrunk – a lockable, weatherproof compartment in the front of the vehicle – provides enough space to fit a large hardside suitcase and a multitude of accessory options for both fleet and retail customers to load gear based on the unique needs of the customer.

The RST’s modular console features a capacity of just over 7 gallons, meaning a lunch cooler can easily fit inside. The RST features a fixed-glass roof, which offers expansive visibility, increased headroom and an enhanced experience for both front and rear passengers.

On the RST, the storage capacity of the 5-foot-11-inch bed is maximized thanks to the innovative available Multi-Flex Midgate, which provides just over 9 feet of storage between the cab and the tailgate when the Midgate is open.

A 40/60 second row seat offers four configurations that allow users to haul gear or equipment while still accommodating a passenger in the second row. With the addition of the available Multi-Flex Tailgate the Silverado EV RST enables up to 10 feet, 10 inches of load floor and storage capability. An available tonneau cover allows items such as lumber or a kayak to be loaded into a fully lockable, weatherproof storage compartment.

Technologies for today and tomorrow
The Silverado EV is packed with the latest technology, including an advanced software system that enables vehicle technologies to evolve over time.

As a driver approaches the RST with an enabled cell phone or key fob, a distinctive lighting animation greets them.

Upon entering the vehicle, a bold 3D animation appears on the RST’s large 17-inch- diagonal LCD freeform infotainment screen, which is paired with a neighboring 11-inch-diagonal driver instrument display. Together with a driver head-up display with a field of view over 14 inches, a driver can’t ask for more information at their disposal. With new, hands-free start, the vehicle turns on automatically after the driver enters with an enabled device, leaving hands free to buckle up and get on the road.

A major enabler of the Silverado EV’s technologies will be the brand’s first application of Ultifi, a new Linux-based software platform. Developed in-house at GM, it separates the vehicle’s software from the hardware to enable rapid and frequent software updates. This will give drivers the opportunity to evolve their vehicles over time, enhancing both the capabilities and accessing cloud services in a flexible and fast way.

Production, availability, and reservations
The Silverado EV will be assembled with domestically and globally-sourced parts at GM’s Factory ZERO, Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center — a facility repurposed and retooled with a $2.2-billion investment devoted to EV production.

In spring 2023, the Silverado EV will debut a WT model offering GM’s longest range battery with an expected GM-estimated range of over 400 miles on a full charge. In fall 2023, a fully loaded RST First Edition model, also delivering a 400-mile range, will debut with an MSRP of $105,000 + DFC. After production ramps up, Chevrolet will unleash the full Silverado EV portfolio, including WT (with a starting at MSRP of $39,900 + DFC), RST, Trail Boss and more. Customers will have the ability to content the truck across various price ranges, with MSRPs around $50,000, $60,000, $70,000, $80,000 and more, allowing them to choose the truck that meets their capability and pricing needs.

Reservations for the Silverado EV are available starting at 1 p.m. ET at Chevrolet.com.

Equinox EV builds on Chevy’s commitment to provide a wide range of EV options

General Motors Chair and CEO Mary Barra confirmed during her 2022 CES keynote address that Chevrolet will launch the Chevrolet Equinox EV in the 2024 model year.

Chevrolet will expand its EV lineup in fall 2023 to include the Equinox EV, an affordable, functional compact SUV that will start at an estimated MSRP of around $30,0001 in the U.S. The Equinox EV, which will be launched with both fleet and retail versions, including LT and RS trims, will leverage GM’s Ultium Platform.

“The Equinox has always played an important role for Chevrolet as the second-highest selling brand nameplate,” said Steve Hill, Chevrolet vice president. “Providing an affordable EV option in the industry’s highest volume segment proves Chevy is going to make EVs available to everyone.”

The announcement of the Equinox EV comes on the heels of Chevy’s reveal of the 2024 Silverado EV and confirmation of the Blazer EV SUV, which will be available in spring 2023.

f you are as ready as we are for a new year with new vibe, maybe you want to try a different New Year’s Eve tradition! The New Year is celebrated around the world and trying something new (other than a party and New Year’s resolutions) might be exactly what you need to kick off 2022 in an upward trajectory.

From the more elaborate to the simple, here are some New Year’s traditions from around the world for you to try:

  • In Ecuador, the people make giant “scarecrows” resembling evil things or people and at midnight, they burn them to start new year evil-free!
  • In Spain, locals eat exactly 12 grapes at midnight to bring about prosperity and good fortune. Originally, this tradition was started by the grape-sellers so they could sell more grapes at the end of the year, but soon it caught on with everyone.
  • In Brazil, the people throw white flowers into the ocean as an offering to Yemoja (the ocean goddess) to ask for blessings in the next year.
  • Italians wear red underwear! Red represents fertility, so maybe only adopt this tradition if you’re hoping to expand your family in 2022.
  • The Japanese end the year and start the new year with a bowl of soba noodles in a tradition called toshikoshi soba (year-crossing noodles). Starting your New Year this way could help with a long and healthy life.

Of course, there are many other traditions to kick off the new year for you to choose from. How does your family celebrate on New Year’s Eve or what is a new tradition you’d like to try?
