This auction and the sale of the first retail production 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 70 th Anniversary Edition in January bring the total amount of money raised for charity by the 2023 Corvette Z06 to $4.6 million in 2022. The 2023 Corvette Z06, which offers the highest-horsepower naturally aspirated V-8 of any production car, drove onto the world-famous auction block in support of the TMCF’s Teacher Quality & Retention Program. Representatives from TMCF, the nation’s largest organization exclusively representing Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Predominantly Black Institutions, were at the auction to experience this exciting moment in the organization’s history. Built on 25 years of success with the Tahoe Police Pursuit Vehicle, Chevrolet debuted its first pursuit-rated Silverado. The 2023 Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle is a crew-cab, short-bed, four-wheel drive truck designed for high speeds and dynamic capability with the added comfort and ample storage capacity needed for an everyday patrol vehicle. “We are constantly having conversations with customers and evaluating how we can better meet their needs,” said Ed Peper, U.S. vice president of GM Fleet. “Our 25 years of engineering Tahoe police pursuit vehicles coupled with Chevrolet’s 100 years of truck success, puts us in a great position to deliver a truly capable Silverado PPV for our customers.” Extending Chevrolet’s PPV Performance Success The Silverado PPV shares many of the most desirable Tahoe PPV performance underpinnings. Highlights include a 355-horsepower 5.3L V-8 engine, standard 10-speed automatic transmission and six-piston Brembo brake front calipers with 16-inch rotors for increased brake durability. Performance is optimized with a standard heavy-duty engine air filter. Ensuring confidence on the road while at top speeds, the Silverado PPV features a certified speedometer, 20-inch black steel wheels borrowed from the Tahoe PPV and 20-inch Goodyear all-terrain speed-rated tires. Made to be Upfitted A long-standing supplier to law enforcement agencies, Chevrolet knows the importance of offering a variety of available specialty equipment options that enable easy upfitting 2, which include: Auxiliary wiring circuits for easy installation of wiring to connect the truck’s horn and siren. Surveillance Mode circuit that allows an upfitter to easily install lighting control. Once a third party installs the wiring, the circuit enables control over the truck’s exterior and interior lighting, allowing for discretion while on patrol. With available power cloth seats, the driver can adjust the seat for their needs easily as well. The interior is easily cleaned thanks to available heavy-duty vinyl flooring and rear seats. Officers carry numerous important digital devices to stay connected to their team. The Silverado PPV includes a 220-amp alternator and two 120-volt outlets to help devices stay powered while away from the base. An optional upfitter switch bank is also available with three 30-amp and two 20-amp circuits for emergency equipment. With configurable storage options, the Silverado PPV allows customers to make the most of the 129.8 cubic feet of combined interior volume. The 5-foot 8-inch truck bed with the available hard tri-fold tonneau cover enables weatherproof storage for cargo that should be stored separate from the interior cab for officer safety. With help from the first-ever Silverado ZR2, coming in spring 2022, you can take your passion to new heights. In the early 1990s, rock climbing was a fringe activity filled mostly with men, affectionately known as “dirtbags,” who spent months at a time sleeping under dank mossy boulders and living on ramen noodles and packets of ketchup. Fewer than 50 climbing gyms existed in the United States, and most of them were little more than janky plywood walls with river rocks bolted into them. Today, the sport looks very different. More than 500 climbing gyms exist in cities across the United States, through which an estimated 10 million people each year are exposed to the physical challenge and joy of trying to scale vertical walls. Also, more than 50 percent of today’s sport-climbing participants are female. And thanks to the work of organizations such as Brown Girls Climb and Memphis Rox — a nonprofit climbing gym and community center in Tennessee that is open to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay — representation and participation rates among minority groups are also on the rise. These welcome changes and increases in participation also bring the challenge of educating people on how best to take their passion for indoor climbing outside. Outdoors, you — and you alone — are responsible for your own safety, which means knowing how to use equipment properly, build anchors, safely navigate the edges of cliffs, and identify and climb around any loose blocks of rock so you don’t pull them off onto your partner. The climbing industry has created “Gym to Crag” initiatives that seek to educate people on how to climb outside safely and ethically, including leave-no-trace practices. Along with the technical skills, you need to know where to go and how to get there. A lot of climbing areas are in the wilderness, which can mean taking unmarked, unpaved roads to trailheads marked by cairns and then hiking to the rock. Websites such as mountainproject.com offer crowd-sourced information about climbing destinations around the world. Luckily, the first-ever Silverado ZR2, available in spring 2022, can help get you there — wherever “there” is. Go Bouldering Bouldering outdoors is primarily about doing difficult movements on short rocks, between 10 and 20 feet high, and it’s the easiest way for anyone to experience what it’s like to climb outdoors. The only gear you need is your climbing shoes, a chalk bag, and a crash pad, which is a foam mat you can carry like a backpack on the approach, then lay flat beneath a boulder problem so you have a soft spot to land when you fall. Spotting boulder climbers is different from belaying someone climbing with a rope. Hold your arms up as they climb, watching them closely; if they fall, try to “bump” them on their hips with the palms of your hands. You’re not trying to catch them, but merely soften their fall and guide them so they land on the crash pads. Similarly, learn how to fall: You don’t want to land on stiff legs; rather, try to tuck and crumple onto the crash pads. Placing crash pads over rocks and tree roots is a smart idea that will help you avoid a sprained ankle, the most common injury in bouldering. Go bouldering at established areas, follow established trails, and feel free to ask the super-friendly climbers that you will invariably meet questions about where to go and what to try. Bouldering is a social, fun, and accessible way to learn climbing techniques and meet new friends. Learn to Set Up Top Ropes Top roping is the best way to gain confidence in your climbing technique. A top rope — which is a rope strung through an anchor at the top of the route — is a safe way to let you focus on practicing the moves, which will feel very different from what you may be used to in the gym. Generally, real rock can be sharp, painful, and slippery — sometimes all at once. It can also be harder to “read the rock” — to see handholds and footholds, and decipher the climbing sequence. With just a handful of relatively inexpensive items of gear such as 20 feet of 1-inch tubular webbing, a cordelette, some slings, and a few locking carabiners, you can build a top-rope anchor almost anywhere, even as a beginner. The best way to (literally) learn the ropes and understand how to construct safe anchors is to hire an AMGA-certified rock climbing instructor. Look for courses specifically designed to teach you how to establish top-rope anchors, and you’ll come away with a skill set that will let you feel confident in safely going outside to climb with your friends.

Read the experience of Chef Kim about her week-long test drive of the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer RS as published in the New Roads Chevrolet online magazine! One Week with a Trailblazer RS Chef Kim is passionate about sourcing the tastiest in-season produce for her restaurant, in tandem with local growers. We loaned her a 2021 Trailblazer RS to help get from farm to table with ease. Trying to explain the vision for her restaurant, Miss Kim, can be tricky, so chef and managing partner Ji Hye Kim sums it up in two simple sentences. “I tell people that it’s as much a Michigan restaurant as it is a Korean restaurant,” she says. “Our food is inspired by Korean grandmothers and by Michigan farmers.” That dedication to fresh, locally sourced produce while respecting her Korean heritage and the home-cooked meals from her youth keeps Chef Kim busy around her home of Ann Arbor, Michigan. “I have to run errands all the time if I want to buy one little ingredient to test a recipe, or if we run out of something,” she says. Her efforts have paid off not only in a happy and well-fed clientele — even after a challenging year for restaurants during the pandemic — but also in professional recognition, with Miss Kim named a semifinalist for the 2020 James Beard culinary awards. While Ann Arbor’s 100-year-old farmers market is just blocks from her restaurant, Kim spends plenty of time on the road visiting local food suppliers and farms. Those shopping trips inform Miss Kim’s recipes — not the other way around. They also were inspiration for some delectable recipes Kim is sharing with New Roads readers just in time to add a touch of Korean flavor to your holiday table. “My favorite thing is to walk through the farmers market to see what’s in season and what strikes my fancy, and that gets my mind turning on the next item I’m going to put on the menu,” she says. She also shops the nearby Argus Farm Stop, which sells items from more than 200 area farmers. Thanks to her experience and connections with local farmers, Kim says she can often tell which farms the vegetables are from by look, feel, or taste. Unlike some chefs who began stirring and chopping as soon as they could walk, Kim didn’t start cooking until later in life. Growing up in South Korea, Kim says her mother didn’t let her in the kitchen: “She’s pretty possessive of the kitchen. She’s known as the best cook in the family.” Despite working in restaurants after she moved to New Jersey as a teenager, Kim wasn’t bitten by the culinary bug until much later. At dinner parties, she realized that even if the conversation was boring, delicious food kept her attention. Almost on a whim, she decided to leave her corporate career and got a job at Ann Arbor staple Zingerman’s Deli. “I took a 90-percent pay cut,” Kim says. “That’s not hyperbole — I did the math.” But what she gave up in salary was more than made up for in experiences. Starting off in the bread department and spending some time selling specialty cheeses, she began to build up her culinary skills and know-how in running a kitchen. After a few years, Kim took advantage of Zingerman’s entrepreneurship program and, with a partner, opened a local food cart called San Street. It was a lower-risk way for Kim to gain firsthand experience cooking and operating her own business. With the food cart running from April through October, Kim used winters to intern at restaurants and kitchens around the country. But she credits her most formative cooking experience to spending time overseas at the Rome Sustainable Food Project. “That’s when I saw local farmers bringing in vegetables every day,” she recalls. “It played a lot into how I perceive food and work in a restaurant with local farmers, and just being conscious of sustainability.” Returning to the U.S., Kim again worked with Zingerman’s to launch Miss Kim. The restaurant has a cute patio outdoors and a cozy interior with tall ceilings and painted-brick walls. Located in Ann Arbor’s historic Kerrytown district, it’s surrounded by cobblestone streets lined with other independent businesses. To help this busy chef keep her business humming, we loaned her a 2021 Trailblazer RS for a week of ingredient shopping, delivering finished meals, and everything in between. Car ferries provide scenic, romantic, and sometimes historical routes to consider for your next road trip. Ferries work strange magic on road trips, giving you a sense of distance and isolation you don’t find on many roads. We suspect that’s because a boat is the critical component in atypical road-tripping: slower, more relaxing, and often more scenic than driving a car. A ferry intermission encourages reflection on scenery usually unknowable to automobiles, and thoughts of what’s been and what’s to come—sort of like interrupting an interstate journey to spend an hour on a horse. Except the horse trots on water, pulls your car, and sells lattes and minestrone on its upper deck. The car-carrying craft are common sights in the Pacific Northwest—especially Seattle, where ferries are more frequently used by daily commuters than adventurers. But loading up for a ferry journey transforms a mundane experience into anything but. This is particularly true for longer excursions over salt water, such as the crossing from Anacortes, Wash., to the San Juan Islands. The ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island makes many online lists of America’s most beautiful crossings, but after testing the ferry experience on some of the smaller vessels in Puget Sound, we decided to head to the San Juan Islands for two reasons: You can drive to Bainbridge, whereas we wanted a refuge accessible only by boat, and the islands provide multiple destinations just as compelling as the ride over. The San Juan Islands include more than 400 islands and reefs and 408 miles of shoreline. Washington State Ferries has simplified your choice of which islands to visit, because service runs to just four: Lopez, Shaw, Orcas, and San Juan. We boarded in Anacortes direct to Friday Harbor, the port on San Juan Island. The peak season cost of just over $80 round-trip covered a standard vehicle and driver, plus a passenger. One of the joys of taking the water route is to slow down and enjoy the view, whether that’s the stunning scenery of the Pacific Northwest or the Silver Ice Metallic Tahoe, which offers a lovely sight on its own. Leave Nothing Behind Our decision to extend the journey out over the water meant we could take our car with us, one of several benefits of going by ferry. There’s much to be said for exploring strange lands in the comfort of your own vehicle. Although there is ample sightseeing room inside, we spent most of the 65-minute ride out on the deck, the mid-morning sea trying on several different climates. Overcast skies hovered from port to the channel between Blakely and Decatur Islands. Sunlight struck around Lopez and up to Orcas, highlighting the pale red trunks of madrona trees. Fog settled in between Orcas and Shaw, and a great dark bird soared just feet above the water. The fog dissipated into a bright overcast sky for our return to land at Friday Harbor. We drove exactly one-tenth of a mile from the ferry dock to a local cafe, where I indulged in crab Benedict, a Seattle specialty that tasted better on San Juan than in Seattle. The crustacean and coffee hit all the spots. A pit stop at the San Juan Islands Museum of Art introduced us to Jim, a local working the front desk. He dismissed our planned itinerary and recited the must-sees: Make sure to visit the Whale Museum, try the phenomenal barbecued oysters at Westcott Bay Shellfish Farm, stroll the 20-acre sculpture park in Roche Harbor, and take in the views from San Juan County Park and the driftwood-strewn South Beach. If you have time before your ferry home, drop in at the ice cream shop next door to the dock and sample one (or four) of their 81 flavors. The Bainbridge ferry earns praise for its sunset view of downtown Seattle. We give similar acclaim to the twilight ride back to Anacortes. Snaking through islands and past sailboats, we’re surrounded by glinting, amber visions of the Pacific Northwest—all enjoyed with a bowl of clam chowder. But better to cross farther south at Cedar Island and spend 2.25 nautical hours traversing 19.7 miles of Pamlico Sound. Taking the ferry over to Ocracoke also puts you on the currents of both our recent and distant past. The waters of Pamlico Sound are known for a history of piracy and war. Blackbeard was the most famous to plunder and sink merchant vessels, and lost his head for it. German U-boats skipped the plundering but resumed the practice of sinking merchant vessels just off the Outer Banks during WWII. A short walk from the Ocracoke port, the British Cemetery stands as a memorial to the 37 seamen who perished when a U-boat sank the HMS Bedfordshire in 1942. Nearby is also where English seafaring captains Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe landed after the first of the English voyages to Roanoke Island in 1584. For vistas, a celebrated passage like the Staten Island Ferry delivers unending views of our nation’s urban icons, while the Alaska Marine Highway ferries offer unending views of iconic nature. “ We’re surrounded by glinting, amber visions of the Pacific Northwest—all enjoyed with a bowl of clam chowder.” But there are ferries that skim the nation’s inland waterways, too, like the Charles Hall Ferry in Utah. Connecting the marinas of Halls Crossing and Bullfrog, the 25-minute ride crosses scenic Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Because of its remoteness, there’s a chance your primary company for the ride will be still waters and the red-hued sandstone, along with yellow-footed gulls, dabbling ducks, and American coots. Short of hauling your own boat to Lake Powell, you won’t find such diverse aquatic company anywhere else in the Utah desert. All across our country, varied national treasures lie within and across waters. The ferry to Vinalhaven, Maine, deposits you on an island first inhabited at least 3,800 years ago. The ferry across the James River in Virginia from Scotland to Jamestown alights at America’s first permanent English settlement. The S.S. Badger ferry, the last coal-fired passenger steamship in the U.S. and a national historic landmark, makes a four-hour journey across Lake Michigan that begins to convey the adjective in “Great Lakes.” To reach those gems, and more, find just the right stretch of coast, point your car at the water, and keep driving. Wait for the boat first, though.
