On the official Chevrolet Facebook page, Chevrolet kicked of June Pride Month by asking the question "What is family to us?" And answering, "It is everything. We're proud to introduce some of our employees and their loved ones as we celebrate Chevy families during Pride 2021." With the post, Chevrolet posted family photos of some of it's employee families consisting of same-sex couples. Notably, the comments on the post were turned off. Chevrolet is a family-focused company and it is great to see Chevy highlighting families who make look a little different, but who are obviously everything to each other. Partners. Spouses. Parents. Siblings. Children. Family is everything no matter what it looks like.

June is almost here, which means it's barbeque season (or almost) here in the Pacific Northwest AND almost Father's Day. We thought it would be great to combine those two great things and share a DELICIOUS barbeque recipe that would be perfect for Father's Day here in Puget Sound Area. Nothing says Pacific Northwest like salmon and cedar, so we found this recipe that combines both for a woodsy infused, fresh from the sea flavor. Fellowship features expanded class size and more immersive experiences to accelerate future of students from historically black colleges and universities 2019 Chevrolet and NNPA Discover the Unexpected fellows. The 2021 fellowship features an expanded class size and more immersive experiences to accelerate the future of students from historically black colleges and universities. Chevrolet and the National Newspaper Publishers Association have expanded the Discover the Unexpected fellowship, offering more students from historically black colleges and universities internships to explore a variety of roles and develop skills as change agents in their communities. The program, which is in its fifth year, will now provide 10 students from HBCUs a 10-week virtual summer internship from June 7 – Aug. 14. The NNPA will place five students with prestigious news organizations across broadcast, film and journalism disciplines to focus on digital and social content creation. For the first time, Chevrolet will offer five additional students the opportunity to work within the brand’s business. The fellows will be fully immersed in the Chevrolet organization and contribute to brand building and go-to market planning. Each fellow will have access to a 2022 Bolt EV to learn more about Chevrolet and General Motors’ vision for an all-electric future and create engaging content showcasing how the vehicle fits into their lives. “The Discover the Unexpected program is a cornerstone of Chevrolet’s ongoing commitment to promote diverse voices and perspectives, and we’re happy to continue our partnership with the NNPA for the fifth year,” said Steve Majoros, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “We’re so proud of this expanded program because we’re able to offer a more immersive experience and double the number of HBCU students we’re accepting. We couldn’t be more excited to welcome this year’s fellowship cohort.” Chevrolet will award each fellow a $10,000 scholarship and a $5,000 stipend. The program has awarded nearly $500,000 in scholarships and stipends since 2016. In addition to the NNPA, Chevrolet works in collaboration with Carol H. Williams Advertising, the brand’s African American agency of record, on the Discover the Unexpected fellowship. “For the last five years, Chevrolet and Carol H. Williams Advertising have worked with historically black colleges and universities and Black news outlets to empower young scholars with opportunities, experiences and skills that make a difference,” said Carol H. Williams, president and CEO of Carol H. Williams Advertising. “Supporting education and opportunities for Black young people is foundational to reducing the health, wealth and opportunity gaps in our African American communities.” The fellows also will participate in a weekly lecture, featuring executives from Chevy’s agency and sponsorship partners in the entertainment and sports sectors. “The NNPA continues to have a longstanding partnership with General Motors that spans more than five decades,” said NNPA President and CEO Benjamin F. Chavis, Jr. “We are, therefore, very pleased about the expansion of the Discover the Unexpected Chevrolet-NNPA fellowships in 2021. In particular, Chevrolet’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is outstanding. The NNPA is the trusted voice of Black America. The City of Burien wants all of us to Restore Our Earth this week as we celebrate Earth Day on April 22. There are many ways to get involved from creating art, learning how effectively dispose of garbage/recycles, participate in the #GreatBurienCleanUp on April 24, and more! And don't forget about the poster contest! All of these things are great ways to get involved and some are great ways to learn and teach future generations the importance of prioritizing preserving and restoring our Earth. Last year was historic in part because of widespread protests after the murder of George Floyd, a black man, at the knee of a white police officer. Floyd's death became a catalyst for people all over the country to learn more about the past and current experiences, events, literature, art, etc. of the African American community in the United States. February is Black History Month and an opportunity for us to refocus our efforts. Right here in Seattle we are fortunate to have the Northwest African American Museum that tells the story of the journey and establishment of a vibrant community. While the museum is physically closed because of Covid-19, the NAAM website offers many great opportunities to learn and enjoy, not just during February, but continually. Through the NAAM website you can learn about iconic black women, Juneteenth, and participate in virtual events, including A Night at the Opera: Celebrating Black Voices and various book readings. If you want to get involved and support the African American community in our area, you can also get more information on donating to NAAM, supporting black-owned businesses, and more.

This past year has been a doozy. It didn’t take long for all of our New Year’s Resolutions for 2020 to become nearly impossible to complete with isolation orders, businesses closing, and other obstacles. Surely 2021 will be better (right?!), but there’s still a lot of uncertainty, so what are some productive and realistic New Year’s Resolutions for 2021? Understanding the stresses of this past year aren’t past for most people, the focus of this list is adding positivity to your life, compared to trying quit negative things (which adds more stress and may not be realistic).  Here are 8 ideas to get you started! Read 3 more books than you did last year Try 1 new food each month Become a plant owner! Indoor plants are an inexpensive way to better emotional health and air quality of your living space. Drink more water! Already working out? Try listening to books or novels instead of music during your workout! Start or write in more frequently a journal! This can be good for your mental health as well as record your experiences during this historic time. Eating more vegetables is a common resolution, so how about a resolution to eat more citrus fruit! Citrus fruit is full of vitamins and other good stuff our bodies need, plus they are low calory and so tasty. Try meditation and/or yoga to better your physical and mental health. There are many free or low-cost programs to help guide you through meditation/yoga and the benefits include better self-awareness and overall wellness. It also carves out “you alone” time during a time many of us craving alone time because we are inside with our families so much.
