The New Year is celebrated around the world and trying something new (other than a party and New Year's resolutions) might be exactly what you need to kick off 2022 in an upward trajectory. From the more elaborate to the simple, here are some New Year's traditions from around the world for you to try: In Ecuador, the people make giant "scarecrows" resembling evil things or people and at midnight, they burn them to start new year evil-free! In Spain, locals eat exactly 12 grapes at midnight to bring about prosperity and good fortune. Originally, this tradition was started by the grape-sellers so they could sell more grapes at the end of the year, but soon it caught on with everyone. In Brazil, the people throw white flowers into the ocean as an offering to Yemoja (the ocean goddess) to ask for blessings in the next year. Italians wear red underwear! Red represents fertility, so maybe only adopt this tradition if you're hoping to expand your family in 2022. The Japanese end the year and start the new year with a bowl of soba noodles in a tradition called toshikoshi soba (year-crossing noodles). Starting your New Year this way could help with a long and healthy life. Of course, there are many other traditions to kick off the new year for you to choose from. No matter where you reside in the U.S., there’s almost certainly a historic, challenging, or simply beautiful racetrack nearby. Take a trip to one and make a memory. A Sunday drive can be good for the soul — a nice way to get out into the world even during times with limited options to do so. But for as much fun as it is, a quick drive is no substitute for a proper weekend getaway. By the same token, enjoying your Corvette or Camaro on a bit of country road or length of open highway (within reason, of course) isn’t the same as taking your Chevrolet performance car to the racetrack. You might assume track days are more expensive than they actually are, or that any track worth the trip is too far away or so remote as to offer nothing in the way of vacation interests for the rest of the family. Nothing could be further from the truth. There are tracks all over America catering to all skill levels, with configurations to challenge novices and experienced drivers alike. Fact is, if you’re reading this in the continental U.S., you’re likely within a day’s drive of a great racetrack. Many are located near major cities or areas friendly and of interest to tourists. As a bonus, many feature track days run by a regional or national Chevy-centric club. A weekend getaway — or indeed, even a longer vacation — to one of America’s great racetracks is a way to unwind, see more of the country, have fun with the family, make new friends, and get more involved in the Chevrolet enthusiast community. That’s not to mention the perks of becoming a more skillful, experienced driver. Let’s scout out some of the best tracks you can visit, spread out across the country. BUTTONWILLOW RACEWAY PARK: RACEWAY #1 Buttonwillow Raceway Park, about 150 miles north of LA, is somewhat remote but still only a couple hours from the Paso Robles wine region and top-notch surfing at San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach. Buttonwillow is unique in that it’s really three tracks in one that can be configured into over 40 different courses (we’re looking at the “Race #1” setup here). Fair warning: The track doesn’t use official turn numbering either, leading to some discrepancies map to map. Some turns can be banked up to 10 percent, while others have negative camber, and quick elevation changes can develop a full skillset. Get on track with companies like Speed Ventures, or bring your car to Buttonwillow’s Performance Driving Clinic.

Here in Western Washington, we're used to the rain. We have to learn to play, work, and drive in the rain because life can't stop when we get some (more) of that liquid sunshine. But it's important not to become complacent while driving in the rain and to remember a few important key tips to keep you driving safely on your way. Here are 5 things you can do to driver more safely in our rainiest seasons: Prepare Your Vehicle Make sure your windshield wipers work or replace them if needed. Make sure you are able to defrost your vehicle so you can see clearly out all the windows. Replace any head or tail lights as necessary and keep plenty of gasoline in your tank. If you aren't 100% confident in your vehicle, give us a call to make an appointment with our service department! Don't Drive Through Standing Water You see the signs and hear the warnings: don't drown, turn around. Already this rainy season we have been hit with a couple serious rain storms that have left many roads underwater. Do NOT try to drive through water on the road or go around signs blocking roads. It isn't worth the risk to your life or your vehicle. It seems that no matter how many times we read/hear the warnings, there are always people who ignore them and require rescuing by first responders. Slow Down If you've been driving for any length of time, you know the terror that comes from hydroplaning, which occurs when your car is driving a high rate of speed and goes on top of standing road water...and results in you losing control of your vehicle. Sometimes it is difficult to see where there might be standing water on the road, so it's a good idea to slow down no matter what. Driving slower also makes it so your vehicle can slow down without sliding/skidding on the wet road, which has less traction. Don't Use Cruise Control It's tempting to use your vehicle's cruise control option whenever you can, but it is important NOT to use it when driving in the rain. Why? The cruise control will keep your wheels turning at the same speed no matter what is happening...even if you hit standing water. Instinctually, we can feel when our vehicle goes over standing water and, hopefully, can slow down quickly enough that the vehicle stops hydroplaning and we regain control. Or if we feel the water is suddenly slippery, we can instantly slow down by taking our foot off the gas a little. When we use cruise control, it is always full-steam ahead. Use Headlights Even in the middle of the day, using your headlights makes your vehicle easier to see in the rain. Those dark rain clouds and reflections off the rain/wet road can make it difficult for you to see...and for people to see you! Help prevent someone from turning out in front of you at the last minute or stepping off the curb in front of you by turning on your headlights any time it starts raining.

Parents express apprehension about being on the road this school year; Chevrolet Traverse offers safety features to help give them added peace of mind As families prepare for their return to in-person school after a year of virtual learning, 68 percent of parents indicate being back on the road every day is a concern when thinking about their children going back to school. With the back-to-school season in full swing, Chevrolet worked with The Harris Poll to survey more than 1,000 parents of school-aged children to discover how the pandemic affected their driving skills and the new realities that teen drivers face. The pandemic impacted how often people were on the road, with 56 percent of parents saying they drove less during the pandemic. Over time, basic driving skills can be forgotten, which may lead to careless driving. According to the survey: 61 percent of parents agree that with fewer people on the road last year, they were able to drive more carefree. Now, over three-quarters of parents surveyed report that they drive more defensively with more people on the road. Teen drivers were impacted by a different complication during the pandemic. Nearly half of parents with a driving-aged child say their child experienced a delay in becoming a licensed driver during the pandemic. And, as more teen drivers prepare to be on the road this school year, the survey shows most teens and new drivers will be in the vehicle without adult supervision. The survey also showed: 61 percent of parents are concerned about their teen on the road because of lost practice time due to the pandemic. 78 percent of parents worry when their child is on the road because other drivers seem more unsafe than before the pandemic. 73 percent of parents report to notice more aggravated drivers on the road than before the pandemic. “With so much on our minds as we prepare for this school year, it’s easy for both parents and teens to forget basic driving skills and road safety,” said Tricia Morrow, Chevrolet safety engineer. “Safety is at the forefront of what we do at Chevrolet, and the safety features available in many of our Chevrolet products, including the Traverse, help bring families peace of mind as drivers – both experienced and new – hit the road.” The 2022 Chevrolet Traverse features multiple active safety and driver assistance features, supporting driver safety. The survey found that 79 percent of parents agree that in-vehicle technology helps give them peace of mind. Active safety, driver assistance and other features on the 2022 Traverse include: Chevy Safety Assist 1, standard on all trims includes Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, Forward Collision Alert and IntelliBeam automatic high beam control. Teen Driver, a technology that, when active, helps parents coach their new drivers – even when the teens are alone in the vehicle. It allows parents to set a speed alert, a volume limit and more. And, with the industry’s first and only in-vehicle report card, it’s easy to track a teen’s driving performance. Buckle To Drive, a safety technology that, when active, can prevent the driver from shifting the vehicle out of park if the driver's seat belt is not buckled for up to 20 seconds. This feature is designed to help remind all drivers to buckle up before driving. Stay connected to teen drivers with new Wireless Apple CarPlay 2 and Android Auto 3 phone projection capability. Additionally, when activated, OnStar Automatic Crash Response 4 can connect drivers to an Emergency-Certified Advisor 5 who can contact help even if they can’t ask for it. SURVEY METHODOLOGY This survey was conducted online by The Harris Poll July 28 – Aug. 4, 2021, on behalf of Chevrolet, among 1,204 adults who are 18 years+ of age and who have a child age 3 to 18 years old that will attend school outside of the home this coming school year. Data were weighted to be representative of the ages 18+ U.S. general population.

We started the summer off with temperatures above 100 degrees and it seems summer isn't done with Western Washington yet! And with summer usually lasting into September, we could be in for more days of uncomfortable heat. While some of us have air conditioning, many of us don't and have to get creative with ways to keep cool. Our furry friends have even fewer options, so we have to get creative with ways to keep them cool and healthy. One fun and tasty way to do that is with frozen dog treats! Sure, it's great to get that pup cone in the drive-thru, but here are some delicious and healthy-for-dogs treats you can make at home to give them any time to beat the summer heat! It's the nearing the end of July, which means we have about 1 month to check off items on our summer bucket lists and make memories. That might sound overwhelming or like a lot of pressure, but you can see and do a LOT in a month in our area. Here are some of our local, summer bucket list ideas to finish out the season strong! Drive up to Lake Diablo/Diablo Dam in the North Cascades. The color of the lake is the stuff Instagram posts were made for. Go across the dam, dip your toes in the water, and even make a learning adventure out of it by checking out the North Cascades Environmental Institute nearby! Ride the ferry! It doesn't matter which ferry, really, because there is nothin more quintessentially Puget Sound in the summer than a ferry ride. If you want to "go big," take a ferry ride to/around the San Juan Islands from Anacortes. If you want something closer to home, take the ferry from Fauntleroy to Vashon Island. If you'd rather see the mountains in the southern part of the state instead of the North Cascades, nothing can beat a summer trip to Mount Rainier. Take in the wild flower fields, hike alongside rivers and creeks, camp under the stars. Mount Rainier is a must-do in the Pacific Northwest. If you want adventure, than white water rafting near Leavenworth might be perfect for you! You could easily make a day trip of driving up to this charming Bavarian village in the Cascades, battle some rapids via several guided tour options, and be home to sleep in your own bed that night! Point Defiance Park in Tacoma is always a great choice during the summer! This 5 mile stretch has incredible views, wonderful restaurant/shopping options, and, of course, the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium! It truly has something for everyone of all ages! This article from Chevrolet's New Roads magazine is full of expert tips to take care of your Chevy this summer! Car washing isn’t a simple sponge-and-bucket affair anymore. Master detailer Todd Cooperider, founder of ESOTERIC – Fine Auto Finishing in Columbus, Ohio, has shared with us which cleaning products, techniques, and tools to use to give your Camaro a better-than-showroom shine. Cooperider details hypercars for a living, but he’s also one of the club, having recently been the proud owner of a C7 Corvette ZR1. According to Cooperider, the hottest thing in detailing today is ceramic coatings, which replace traditional wax and can last for years on your car’s surface instead of months. This hard-wearing hydrophobic coating serves as a protective layer and can also give your car’s paint renewed luster. Many car owners today also opt for paint protection film (PPF). PPF requires professionals, such as Cooperider, to install, and should protect your paint from rock chips. Often called the “sacrificial layer,” PPF installations usually last for four or five years. Polishing your paint, once a job for the pros alone, has become more accessible to the DIY detailer. Cooperider says a good polish comes down to two things: the right tools and the right technique. Look for a car polishing kit that comes with an orbital polisher, a selection of polishing pads in various sizes, and a good polishing compound. As for technique, watching instructional videos is important to learn about factors such as pad flatness, arm speed, pressure, and overlapping your passes. This sounds almost too simple, but Cooperider says the most important tool on a detailer’s belt is a small LED flashlight. What your car’s paint looks like in the sun does not represent its actual condition; you’ll see a whole other car under an LED light. Before any detailing, pull your car into the garage and use a light to inspect for swirls, cracks, and other flaws. Also, hit the car with the light after detailing to check your work and eliminate smears and streaking. Finally, let’s go over the basics of car washing. It might go without saying, but Cooperider reminds us that all detailing, including washing, should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight. That’s because direct sunlight can distort your view of paint, and the higher temps can cause many car cleaning products to be less effective. When doing a basic wash, use the two-bucket method: one bucket for soaping your applicator and one for rinsing it. And last, never dry your car with a bath towel. Use a high-quality microfiber towel and apply it with as little pressure as possible. Or get a vehicle dryer like the pros. Yes, you could use a leaf blower in a pinch, but a vehicle dryer filters out debris from the intake and warms the air, which dries the car more quickly. If you decide to detail your own car this year, these tips should make the process easier and the outcome beautiful. Remember, clean cars are more fun to drive, too.

It sure feels like we have a lot to celebrate after a year of Covid-19 caused shut downs, cancellations, illness, and more.
