Just like any other large city, the streets can get pretty thick in Burien. It’s important that you and your passengers stay safe while maneuvering through any crowded metropolis. Whether it’s navigating the frontage roads or cruising turnarounds, driving in busy areas has its challenges. Drive like a local with these six handy tips for piloting your way through congested traffic.

Slow Down

According to one resource, 25 percent of car accidents happen during rush hour. This time of day is particularly dangerous due to the high volume of people rushing to get home from work. The number of distractions increases too, like the kid’s excited chatter about their day at school.

When you hit that wall of traffic, slow down. Trying to zigzag from lane to lane won’t save you much time in the long run, and it’s stressful. When you keep your speed low, you have plenty of time to avoid potential collisions with those impatient drivers who are weaving their way forward.

Keep a Buffer Zone

Do your best to keep a buffer zone between you and the vehicle traveling in front of you. This extra space gives you added time to react to what’s happening on the road. A car up ahead may suddenly brake for a dog in the street, or perhaps you’re approaching an accident site? Experts recommend keeping between 3 and 5 seconds between you and the car in front of you.

Pay Attention

While this tip seems like a no-brainer, staying focused on the road is even more essential during rush hour. With all of today’s high-tech diversions, a general mental picture of the space around you takes some concentration.

Keep track of the driving conditions around you and use your mirrors and blind spot monitor to help you prepare for any surprises down the road. Watch for changes in other driver’s patterns, road signs, and other obstacles in your way. Try to keep the distractions down to a minimum and of course, never text and drive.

Communicate Your Intentions

Even if you’re driving an old clunker, it’s equipped with turn signals. Use these indicators to let other drivers know what you’re up to. It’s more than merely a courteous gesture. This habit could prevent a collision, especially in congested traffic. Let other drivers prepare for what you’re about to do, whether you’re changing lanes or putting on the brakes.

Stay Cool

We all get frustrated when we’re stuck in a traffic jam. As annoying as it is, keep your cool. Driving angry won’t do a thing for the jam up ahead. It will only increase your stress level.
Take a few deep breaths or if that doesn’t work, consider pulling over. Take a break. Grab a cup of coffee, go for a walk or answer a text message while you wait for things to get moving again.
Few situations are as frustrating as rush hour. Use our handy survivor’s guide next time you’re driving in high traffic areas.
