This article from Chevrolet's New Roads magazine is full of expert tips to take care of your Chevy this summer! Car washing isn’t a simple sponge-and-bucket affair anymore. Master detailer Todd Cooperider, founder of ESOTERIC – Fine Auto Finishing in Columbus, Ohio, has shared with us which cleaning products, techniques, and tools to use to give your Camaro a better-than-showroom shine. Cooperider details hypercars for a living, but he’s also one of the club, having recently been the proud owner of a C7 Corvette ZR1. According to Cooperider, the hottest thing in detailing today is ceramic coatings, which replace traditional wax and can last for years on your car’s surface instead of months. This hard-wearing hydrophobic coating serves as a protective layer and can also give your car’s paint renewed luster. Many car owners today also opt for paint protection film (PPF). PPF requires professionals, such as Cooperider, to install, and should protect your paint from rock chips. Often called the “sacrificial layer,” PPF installations usually last for four or five years. Polishing your paint, once a job for the pros alone, has become more accessible to the DIY detailer. Cooperider says a good polish comes down to two things: the right tools and the right technique. Look for a car polishing kit that comes with an orbital polisher, a selection of polishing pads in various sizes, and a good polishing compound. As for technique, watching instructional videos is important to learn about factors such as pad flatness, arm speed, pressure, and overlapping your passes. This sounds almost too simple, but Cooperider says the most important tool on a detailer’s belt is a small LED flashlight. What your car’s paint looks like in the sun does not represent its actual condition; you’ll see a whole other car under an LED light. Before any detailing, pull your car into the garage and use a light to inspect for swirls, cracks, and other flaws. Also, hit the car with the light after detailing to check your work and eliminate smears and streaking. Finally, let’s go over the basics of car washing. It might go without saying, but Cooperider reminds us that all detailing, including washing, should be done in the shade, not direct sunlight. That’s because direct sunlight can distort your view of paint, and the higher temps can cause many car cleaning products to be less effective. When doing a basic wash, use the two-bucket method: one bucket for soaping your applicator and one for rinsing it. And last, never dry your car with a bath towel. Use a high-quality microfiber towel and apply it with as little pressure as possible. Or get a vehicle dryer like the pros. Yes, you could use a leaf blower in a pinch, but a vehicle dryer filters out debris from the intake and warms the air, which dries the car more quickly. If you decide to detail your own car this year, these tips should make the process easier and the outcome beautiful. Remember, clean cars are more fun to drive, too.

But, just how do you take care of this classy car? Use these simple solutions to keep your luxury vehicle in tip-top shape. Start With a Wash A luxury automobile is an investment in yourself. It makes sense that since you've chosen to spend this kind of cash on a car, you're going to do everything to protect it. You could treat it just like an average car and send it through the car wash at the gas station, but that feels almost wrong, doesn't it? Hire a professional detailer or better yet, do the job yourself. Set a goal to wash your car every week. Start with the body, then hose out the fender wells and undercarriage, taking care to remove dirt and road salt. more Use a Clay Bar Heading out on the open road in your premium set of wheels is truly one of life's greatest pleasures. All this excitement comes with responsibility too. Protect your car's finish from microscopic dust, and other abrasives kicked up by the road. Those particles attach themselves to your finish and eventually cause scratches that dull your car's shiny surface. After you wash away all the dirt, give your ride a good wipe down with a clay bar. Use it to remove tiny contaminants that linger on the surface of your vehicle. Polish and Wax the Finish Now, let's move on to a hand-wax for a showroom shine. While you may be tempted to skip this tedious step, proper polishing removes scratches and buffs any imperfections that dull your car's finish. This step is especially important for luxury cars, where appearance is everything. When taking care of the exterior of your luxury car, choose your products wisely. Look for buffing balls made from Italian viscose fibers for superior performance. They don't overheat or cake up like foam buffers do. When it comes to waxing and protecting your finish, a glosser makes the work a whole lot easier. Use a microfiber cloth and get rid of tough-to-remove road grime on your car's exterior. Clean the Interior Detailing your luxury car's interior is just as crucial as waxing its finish. You paid a premium for those genuine leather seats and real wood accents. Make sure they look good and last as long as possible with proper cleaning. Use a clean microfiber cloth to dust your car's interior surfaces. Wipe down the dashboard, navigation screens, air vents, and upholstery. It's also the perfect way to apply the leather cleaner and conditioner of your choice. Looking for a few clever hacks for detailing your Chevy? Summer is the perfect time to detail your car, s o try a few of these detailing hacks to get the interior of your car smelling fresh and sparkling clean. Getting Touch Stains Out Once you do a quick vacuum of your seats, you might find a few stubborn stains which can be a big pain to get out. One of the most common stains in a Chevy is a coffee stain. This is easy to get out. Mix two parts water to one part white vinegar and blot the mixture on the coffee stain. If the stain is ink from a pen or marker, use rubbing alcohol and water or hairspray if you have it. Let it soak into the stain for a few minutes before blotting the stain and rinsing it out. If the stain is from grease, you'll want something a little bit stronger. If the stain is still wet, try blotting it with a dry towel to help absorb the grease. If the stain is dry, you'll need to squirt a few drops of WD-40 on the stain and then blot it with a cloth. Avoid wiping the stain as this will spread it rather than help to remove it. Cleaning the Little Crevices Vacuuming the seats and cleaning the windows is the easy part, but how do you get the dust out of the little crevices like your air vents. If you have a can of compressed air, this is a great way to blow the dust out of those hard to reach places. You can clean the air vents, the areas around all the cars buttons, and even around the edges of all the windows. Once you blow the dust away, you'll want to go over those same areas with a cleaner. Get yourself a small sponge brush that you might use to paint and dampen it with your preferred car cleaner. Then you can use it to get into those same tough places and give it a deep clean. Scrub Grime and Dirt Away If your car has a vinyl interior, you'll likely have dirt embedded in it that you can't see. The most common areas for dirt and grime buildup are your door handles and the center console near your cup holders. Start with a regular kitchen sponge. Use the rougher side of the sponge with a little bit of car cleaner to clean all the vinyl inside the car. If you still have stuck on bits of grime and dirt, grab a toothbrush that you no longer use and go back over those surfaces pushing hard with the bristles. This should help get rid of all those dirt marks. Detailing your Chevy doesn't have to cost a fortune. Many people take their vehicles in for regular maintenance such as oil changes but don't think much about their tires. Maintaining your tires is important, as it will improve your drive and make your tires last longer. This will end up saving you in the long run. Here are several ways to make your Chevy tires last longer. Keep the Tires Inflated It's important to check on a regular basis that your tires are properly inflated. Many cars have a sensor that will go off when they're too low, but you don't need to wait until that goes off to see how they're doing. Tires that are over-inflated or under-inflated might not brake, accelerate, or steer correctly. Do this when they are still cold. more If you don't know what the correct pressure should be, look in your owner's manual. Many cars also have a sticker that's on the back or driver's side front door that lists the proper pressure for both the rear and front tires. Check the Alignment If you take your vehicle to the tire shop, they can look at your alignment with many different tools. If you want to figure out on your own if you have an alignment problem, you can check it in your driveway first. Look for camber, which is the tilt of the tire away or toward the car's frame, by standing in front of the car to check the front tires or behind it to check the rear tires. If you see that the tires go in, which means the tops are closer than the bottoms are, the tread will wear away on the inside part of the tire first. If the bottoms are closer together than the tops, there is more wear on the outside of the tires. This means it's time to get your tires aligned at the shop. Clean the Tires You'll want to inspect your tires and clean them on a regular basis. Make sure there are no rocks or debris stuck in the treads that could lead to worse problems later on. This will often shorten the life span of your car. When you wash your vehicle, use a bristled brush to scrub the treading. This will get rid of any debris or objects you found. Once you wash the sides and tops of your tires, roll the car backward a few feet so you can wash the other side. Replace Your Tires When Necessary While you can do many things to maintain your tires, there will be a point where you need to completely replace them. You can decide this by doing the penny test. Put the penny so that Lincoln's head points down into the tire tread. If you can see his entire head, it may be time to replace the tire.
